ELKINS, W.Va. — Students with Elkins-based YouthBuild North Central recently worked with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) Aquatic Habitat Enhancement Program to restore fish and wildlife habitats at the site of the historic logging town of Spruce, near the head of the Shavers Fork River. Since the old town was abandoned and demolished in the 1940s, the site had remained largely unforested.

HINTON, W.Va. — Bluestone State Park, near Hinton in Summers County, has reopened following its closure over Memorial Day weekend. Due to high water from flooding, sections of the park were closed during the holiday. Facilities back in operation include campgrounds, the swimming pool, picnic shelters and the boat launch. The Old Mill Campground remains closed, but is expected to be open by the end of this week.

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va.- Spring turkey hunters harvested 11,539 gobblers this year, an increase of more than 11 percent from 2016, according to preliminary numbers provided by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. The harvest is the largest since 2006 when 11,735 birds were harvested, and is more than 18 percent above the 10-year average.

BRUCETON MILLS, W.Va. – The Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia (ACCA) will celebrate Morgantown Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Coopers Rock State Forest. The celebration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a guided bird walk on the Raven Rock Trail. After the walk, participants may gather in the pavilion near the overlook to enjoy coffee, a live raptor presentation at 10 a.m., a bird walk for children at 11 a.m. and another live raptor presentation at noon. FLATWOODS, W.Va. – Rob Tallman, Dist. 3 (east central counties) wildlife manager for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, has been selected by the West Virginia State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation as the 2016 Wildlife Manager of the Year. He was presented the chapter’s "Making Tracks Award" at the annual awards banquet Jan. 14, 2017, by State Chapter President Jeff Jones.

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is requesting original color wildlife paintings for the 2018 edition of the award-winning West Virginia Wildlife Calendar, according to DNR Wildlife Resources Section Chief Paul Johansen. The deadline for submitting artwork is February 17, 2017.

CAIRO, W.Va. – Railroad history buffs and train enthusiasts are invited to a special presentation about “The Railroads of Ritchie County” Jan. 22 at North Bend State Park. David Scott, president of the Ritchie County Historical Society, will be the lecturer about these railroad lines at 2 p.m. at North Bend State Park Lodge. The program is open to the public at no charge.

MULLENS, W.Va. – Beginning Jan. 20, you can charge your Tesla and other electric or hybrid vehicles at Twin Falls Resort State Park near Mullens. An opening ceremony and ribbon cutting will be held at 11 a.m., and the public is invited. A Tesla will be onsite to demonstrate how an electric vehicle (EV) charging station works. The charging station is located at the upper parking area at the park lodge.

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Preliminary counts indicate West Virginia hunters harvested 112,384 white-tailed deer during the recently completed bucks firearms, antlerless, muzzleloader, archery, crossbow, and youth/Class Q/Class XS deer seasons, according to Paul Johansen, chief of the Division of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife Resources Section. This year’s total harvest was 19 percent below the 2015 deer harvest of 138,493 and 15 percent below the five-year average of 132,466.

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia hunters harvested 3,012 black bears during the combined 2016 archery, crossbow and firearms seasons, according to Colin Carpenter, Black Bear Project leader for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

PIPESTEM, W.Va. – Pipestem Resort State Park is offering a three-day lifeguard training course Jan. 20 - 22, 2017. The classes will be conducted in the McKeever Lodge indoor pool. Class times will be held 5:30 - 10 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. Saturday; and conclude at 7 p.m. Sunday. The class is limited to 15-20 individuals. Preregistration is required. The course cost of $200 per person includes classes and materials. Overnight accommodation is available at McKeever Lodge or state park cabins.
